"Joanne was wonderful to work with, I consider
the portrait of my horse and I to be a family heirloom."
-- Nancy Thorne |
 |
"Joanne has the ability to capture a seemingly
ordinary moment in time, and create an image which catches
our heart and soul."
-- Leslie Farwell |

Consultation:
Whether
it’s
in person, via phone, mail or email, Joanne and the prospective
client discuss and agree on the proposed painting’s
subject matter, scale, budget and scheduling issues. The
terms of payment (see price list below) are also fully
discussed and agreed upon.
The media Joanne works in are
gouache and oil. Gouache is an opaque watercolor like a
finely ground tempera paint. It needs to be framed with
a mat and glass, whereas oil does not. Oil has a richer
quality and is generally recommended, if it’s within
budget.. All paintings may be, and often are, custom framed
under Joanne's direction.
Prices vary based on the paint
media chosen, the painting’s
size, the number of figures rendered, framing options,
and travel and shipping expenses; if any.
After an initial
consultation, Joanne’s work process
begins with a photo shoot of the subject, followed by the
submission of drawings and color sketches, all to client
satisfaction. Once any needed modifications are made and
agreed to, Joanne then begins work on the final painting
Work
Process:
Joanne generally does her own on-site photography
of the subject matter. (Working from existing photos may
be an option, but is generally not recommended). Joanne
is practiced at putting subjects at ease, as well as in
finding the right photographic imagery to work from.
Over
the ensuing weeks or months, the client and Joanne then
discuss and agree on the following material, in the following
order:
1.) the best photos from which to use as source
material.
2.) the initial, exploratory black and white drawings.
3.)
the preparatory color work; which is the last stage before
beginning the actual painting. |

These prices are based upon compositions with
one figure. Additional figures or specific background portraits
will add 40% of the base portrait price for each added figure.*
If
you don’t have an idea of size yet, simply use
the 8” x 10” price as a place to start and
then adjust the price at a later stage when you are clearer
on what you want. Keep in mind that when you consider the
size of the piece you should also consider the inches added
by framing. The frame can add between 6 and 12 inches to
each measurement.
Joanne requires payment in thirds with
one third of the total due at the shoot, the second when
drawings are approved, and the last payment upon delivery
of the finished painting.
Tax, shipping and insurance are
dependent upon locale. Cost of frame (dependent upon size
of portrait and type of frame selected) is additional.
Joanne Mehl retains ownership of all preliminary work
(sketches and photography) and copyright on all images.
Initial graphite sketches can be purchased for $125 each.
*
For example, if you want an 8”x10” painting
of a child and pony (two figures), take the base price
of $2500 and add 40% ($1000) , for the painting’s
sum of $3500. |
