“View of Ha’ena from Black Pot Beach”, 6 x 8, oil on panel

I have to say that with these paintings I’ve done on Kauai, I’m loving my pthalo green paint for maybe the first time in my life. Pthalocyanin green and blue are modern oil paint colors in which the green or blue is made from a very strong dye. You have to take some care with it to keep it from taking over, but it’s the only thing that really has the power to approximate the color of the water in Hanalei. The hue and intensity of the colors Hawaii have been inspiring artists for generations. The foliage, flowers, water and sky are all so intense that it’s hard to put that down on canvas or panel, so it’s great to have a paint color that comes close to what you are seeing as an artist.
