07 Aug “Balance is Key”, 8.5 x 11.5, oil on panel
I think we can all agree that in life, as in art, balance is key. It is a marathon, not a sprint, so you need to proceed in a sustainable way and find the right mix of work to play, saving to spending, activity to rest. In painting we are trying to find balance in the composition so that each mass is counter weighted by corresponding empty space, dark areas by light areas and colors, well, it takes a particular type of color balance to create the illusion of skin on a model. Balance is a thing not easily quantified or defined in concrete terms. Each person may find a unique balance that is the right thing for him or her alone.
I meditated on balance while painting this model holding a pose while perched atop a stack of cushions and crates. She was able to hold this pose for three hours, finding her balance again after each break. A true metaphor for life.
