Alice is 96. Her children commissioned me to do this portrait of her sitting in the shade of her front porch with her hot pink pashmina shawl around her shoulders. It is clear that she didn’t reach this age by focusing on regrets, and her bright smile radiates her joy in the moment. When I mentioned that I might come back for a reshoot, she made it clear that she wasn’t going to get fixed up for me a second time and this was the only opportunity I had to get what I needed. I made sure that I did.
