View of Pinetrees from Hanalei Kaua’i – acrylic on panel – 6 x 8

I sat down to paint on the beach at Hanalei Bay on the island of Kauai, and didn’t even think about the pitfalls of painting in the full sun. You are hot, sweaty, you are blinded by glare and brightness, and your (in this case) acrylic paint dries instantly in the heat. Sometimes you take care to set up in the shade, but as time passes you find yourself baking in full sun. This experience inspired me to embrace umbrellas as a tool for survival! But, in spite of that learning experience, the painting was a success and I managed to capture the subtle light on the hills and mountains behind the beach at Pinetrees ( a famous surf break named for the Ironwood trees shading the sand). I hope you like this piece for its subtleties, as I do.
