Afternoon on the Water, Kailua, Oahu, 6 x 8
A hot afternoon painting in the shade on Kaelepulu Canal in Kailua. The mountain range is the Ko’olau’s, rising dramatically behind this community on the windward side of Oahu. The light on the water and the reflections of the Ironwoods in the left foreground attracted me to this scene but I think the detail of …
Diamond Head during the Rainy Season, 6 x 8
Usually when I’ve painted Diamond Head in the past it’s been during the dry heat of late Summer. This day was unusual because of the amount of rain there had been and how green the slopes were. I enjoyed using green and gold where there usually would be brown and gold. The blue in the …

Morning Haze, Hanalei, Kauai, 6 x 8
I never get tired of painting this view of Ha’ena from Kenomene Beach. On this trip we had rain and clouds, which made the view hazy and the colors muted. The turquoise color of the water, always so unbelievable, was pale, reflecting the sky’s gentler mood after the heat of Summer.
View From the Pittock Mansion, Portland, OR, 8 x 10, Oil on panel, (framed dimensions: 15.5 x 13.5)
This was a stellar place to be on this beautiful Summer day in Portland, OR. There are not very many views of the city of Portland that are this amazing, and I could return to paint this again and again. Weather would make this interesting too….now there’s an idea! This particular view over the rooftops …
South From Baseline Road, Washington County, Oregon, 8 x 10, oil on panel, 15.5 x 13.5 (framed)
I painted this during the 2017 Washington County Plein Air Paint Out. It was a beautiful day as I spied a southern view from Baseline Road, with the fallow autumn field, surrounding treeline, and the soft hues of the Chehelam Mountains rising beyond. It’s always a challenge to paint in a contest, but it’s easier …
View of Mamalahoa, oil on canvas panel, 8 x 10
Mamalahoa is the famous mountain that looms behind the small town of Hanalei on the island of Kaua’i. It’s pretty impressive with waterfalls and constantly changing light, a true challenge for any painter. One of the challenges for painting en plein air is dealing with the elements; the bugs, heat, sunburn, wind, sand that affects …
Sailboats at Anchor, Hanalei, HI
I painted this piece from the end of the Hanalei Pier. The weather had been stormy with fog and clouds blowing in waves from ocean to shore. I had to set up, wait and have faith but eventually my patience was rewarded with a clear crystalline view of Ha’ena and the sailboats bobbing in the …
The New Sellwood Bridge, Portland, OR, 9 x 12, oil on panel
I painted this painting of the new bridge after I painted the previous painting of the Sellwood Bridges, which was during construction and while both bridges were still visible. Now you can see that the old bridge structure is gone. I like the design of the new bridge with its red arches. It makes a …
