24 May “Heading Out”, gouache on 100% rag board, 9 × 6.25
In this gouache sketch I am investigating composition, color and light for a much larger oil painting. I love sketching in gouache and often these preliminary sketches have their own appeal and become paintings in their own right. That’s certainly the case here with this one. The slanting morning light is especially beautiful as it silhouettes the grooms and horses making their way from the stables to the saddling paddock. Keeneland Racetrack has especially beautiful mature trees which create rhythm and interest in the background. I’m always looking for this kind of harmony which creates a deep inner pleasure and satisfaction in my soul.
