Horse Head Study, Graphite on Rag Paper, 8 x 11

When I’m exploring images for a portrait commission I like to investigate the different possibilities thoroughly. It’s surprising which images pop out at you when they are translated into the form of a drawing. I usually do at least three drawings, sometimes as many as five, to better chase down the essence of a subject. These studies usually take me 4 – 5 hour each, because if the quality isn’t there, then they won’t serve my purpose and show me if they have what I’m after.

This handsome fellow was quite the character, as I’m sure you can see. He didn’t make it difficult to portray his personality in these sketches because the force of his character came through in everything. In each drawing study you can see a different aspect of his personality evident.
