Alla Prima is a wet-into-wet oil painting technique where subjects are painted quickly in one sitting. While widely usedin plein air painting, here we’ll explore and exploit its strengths in rendering a portrait using a live model. We’ll begin by painting the proportions of the face and features, and then quickly paint in the values. We’ll also cover how to see and judge values and warm and cool colors, how to mix flesh tones, how to lay out a palette, and various other paint handling techniques. If you haven’t tried it yet, painting portraits Alla Prima style is highly expressive and rewarding!
